Social Media Terms

Blog – A regular feature appearing as part of an online publication that typically relates to a particular topic and consists of articles and personal commentary by one or more authors.

Cloud Computing – The practice of storing regularly used computer data on multiple servers that can be accessed through the internet.

Cookie – A small file or part of a file stored on a World Wide Web user’s computer, created and subsequently read by a website server, and containing personal information (as a user identification code, customized preferences, or a record of pages visited).

Crowd Sourcing – The practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contribution from a large group of people and especially from the online community rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.

Data Mining – The practice of searching through large amounts of computerized data to find useful patterns or trends.

Forum – A medium of open discussion or expression of ideas.

Malware – Software designed to interfere with a computer’s normal functioning.

Media – The system and organizations of communication through which information is spread to a large number of people.

Podcast – A program (as of music or talk) mad available in digital format for automatic download over the internet.

Social Media – Forms of electronic communication (as websites for social networking and micro blogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content.

Webinar – A live online educational presentation during which participating viewers can submit questions and comments.

Wiki – A website that allows visitors to make changes, contributions, or corrections.
